What’s the purpose of a Vapor Barrier?

Helps Control Crawlspace Humidity

When properly fastened and sealed to your foundation wall, with overlapped and taped seams, this system will assist in controlling the humidity in your crawl space by blocking moisture movement through the ground.

It Keeps Out Pests

A Continuous Vapor Barrier is just that, continuous. There are no seams, no openings and its tightly fastened to the foundation walls and pillars. Pests that try to find their way up from the bottom of the foundation wall will find themselves out of luck!

Improved Indoor Air Quality

If the soil under your home is exposed, it will off-gas into your crawl space, which means it will be off-gassing right into your home. Installing a continuous Vapor Barrier will seal over that dirt-floor, preventing off-gassing into your living space.

An Accessible Crawlspace, Forever

Okay, maybe not forever, but a continuous Vapor Barrier is tough, durable and resistant to damage so long as it’s not unreasonable. If installed correctly, a Class 1 Vapor Barrier can last the life-time of your home. An added bonus: your plumber and HVAC person will love you!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How thick a Vapor Barrier?

We recommend a 20mil, Woven Vapor Barrier.

FLC Energy always recommends a woven Vapor Barriers. These units will never separate, and they’re consistent in thickness across the entire roll of plastic. We can install materials down to 10Mil too, but these plastics tend to get inconsistent in their Mil thickness and are more likely to puncture or wear over time.

  • Whats up with the Cat Urine Smell?

    Delamination, Moisture and Mildew

Dual layer reinforced vapor barriers can separate over time, allowing moisture between the two pieces of plastic. Bacteria inside can begin to smell like cat urine. This seems to have been a problem in the past, but also seems to have been blown out of proportion as a scare tactic. Even still, we’ve switched to Woven systems over the years because they’re stronger and lighter.
